Living her passion in new job
Cynthia J. Martin just started a new job as family services and training manager at Habitat for Humanity of Broward in Fort Lauderdale. She made the move after a 40-year career working in the public and private sectors, most recently as a learning and development facilitator at Wells Fargo. The job lets her live out her passion: giving back to the community and educating individuals so they can achieve their life goals. For the most part, she says, it does not feel like work. Rather, it is a heartfelt experience where she can connect with people on a deeper level.
Why I’m a good fit: I am able to utilize my financial skills to help discover the resources and tools for the future homeowners in the program and provide a true “reality check” to empower people for homeownership. Additionally, I have been volunteering on the construction sites and in the youth program for many years and I am honored to join the staff.
On the job
What I do: I educate future homeowner families and dispel the myths of what homeownership is about. I also educate local consumers about the opportunities available, like volunteering and sponsoring a home, which would allow them to give back to our community.
Goal: Owning a home is the dream of most individuals, and this job helps them work toward that dream. That means educating families in all aspects
of homeownership and empowering them to accept responsibility and accountability for the changes that occur in their lives that lead to a healthy and safe environment for their families.
Advice to young professionals: Get involved. Know your community, know the needs within your community and get out there, volunteer and make a difference.
Wisdom: The difference you make for others will come back to you twofold. Volunteering helps you to understand what it means to love and work with others unconditionally and provides peace to the soul.
