Lorna Brown-Burton, of Brown-Burton & DeMicco PLLC in Fort Lauderdale, was honored recently with The Florida Bar’s 2016-17 Presidents’ Awards of Merit, presented by outgoing President William J. Schifino Jr. at the Bar’s annual convention. Brown-Burton has been on the Bar’s Board of Governors since 2012. Ash Benzo, treasurer for the city of Fort Lauderdale, was appointed to The Florida Bar’s Citizens Advisory Committee, an advisory group of 12 citizens who provide two-way communicat­ion between the state’s major citizen constituen­cies and the Bar’s Board of Governors. The committee also helps to inform and educate the public about significan­t legal and justice issues. The committee meets three times a year, often in conjunctio­n with Board of Governors meetings.

North Campus Dean of Faculty, Dr. Jacqueline Peña, has been selected as a 2017 Hispanic Women of Distinctio­n honoree and will be honored at a luncheon in August at the Signature Grand in Davie. Peña, who joined MDC in 2010, is being recognized for her innovation, including several camVerizon. pus programs she created such as: the Free College for a Day, for those who want to sample the college experience, and the new Weekend College at the North Campus, which gives students the flexibilit­y to complete an entire degree program with weekend-only courses. The Miami Community Police Benevolent Associatio­n, in conjunctio­n with the Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum, honored frontiers men and women with its firstever First Five Pioneer Award. Dickson, City of Miami’s first black Chief of Police; Assistant Chief Police Carolyn Clarke; and Lieutenant­s: Archie McKay, Otis Davis, and Walter Hardemon; and Carolyn Pates, City of Miami’s first black dispatcher, were recognized for their contributi­ons to the inclusion and advancemen­t of African-American police officers and support staff in the City of Miami Police Department.

Janet Schijns has joined Office Depot in the newly created role of senior vice president, services - copy, print and tech, and will oversee the company's regional print production facilities to support large-scale printing capabiliti­es and the delivery needs of business customers. Previously, Schijns worked for Before that, Schijns was with Motorola; and also ran a high-tech channel sales consulting firm.

Nathans Investigat­ions has named Eric Nathan president and chief executive officer of the private investigat­ion and surveillan­ce firm. Nathan previously worked for the Florida Bureau of Private Investigat­ors as a lead investigat­or.

Nonprofit

Karen O’Byrne, chief financial officer and chief operating officer for Modernizin­g Medicine, and Don Cook, chief marketing officer and executive director of strategic initiative­s at Broward College, recently joined the board of directors of PACE Center for Girls Broward, in Fort Lauderdale. Jeanne Tamargo to lead its philanthro­pic efforts and expand support services throughout Broward County. Tamargo was previously Salvation Army Miami area command director of social services. United Way of Broward County announced Sergeant Major Ken Juede as the new director for MISSION UNITED. During the past year, he was director of Homeless Veterans’ Reintegrat­ion Program and Veteran Employment for MISSION UNITED.

Palm Beach Opera promoted Natalie Parker as manager of individual and planned giving. In addition, the organizati­on announced newly-created positions for Alexandra

Richter as individual giving and grants manager; Alyse Landers Keller as special events and corporate relations manager, and Abbey

Ward as education and community engagement associate.

Restaurant

TooJay’s restaurant has named Peter Cowley the general manager of its new Boynton Beach location. Crowley, who joined TooJay’s in 1988 as a line cook, has worked as kitchen manager, assistant manager, area director and in the food and beverage department at the corporate office.

Education

Isabel Fernandez and Andrew Fierman have been appointed as the new board chair and vice-chair, respective­ly, of Communitie­s in Schools of Miami. Fernandez is a vice-president at City National Bank and Fierman is a partner at Alberni Caballero & Fiermann LLP.

Coral Gables Title + Escrow, LLC announced that founding partner Rodney L. Barreto was named chief executive officer of the new Coral Gables firm.

Duane Marker has joined PuroClean as corporate controller in Tamarac. Most recently, he was a corporate controller at Tridien Medical.

Stephen Artusi has been promoted to group vice president and general counsel of JM Family, in Deerfield Beach.

Caren Williams was appointed to the created position of vice president and deputy general counsel of Corporate Governance; and Andre Hall was promoted to assistant vice president and general counsel for World Omni Financial Corp., a subsidiary of JM Family.
