Daub chose Owls to get on field

- Matthew DeFranks

BOCA RATON — Kain Daub is already making progress in a Florida Atlantic uniform. On Tuesday, he started cramping during practice’s eighth period. On Wednesday, he didn’t cramp until the end of practice. “So I’m getting there,” Daub said. Daub, a former Florida State linebacker and top-100 recruit, practiced for the first time with the Owls on Tuesday morning after he was cleared academically.

FAU and coach Lane Kiffin haven’t decided on a landing spot for Daub, though he mostly worked as a stand-up defensive end on Wednesday morning. Daub received snaps with both the first- and second-team defenses.

“He can be a number of things,” Kiffin said. “He can be a big Mike [middle linebacker]. He’s 265 pounds. He can be a defensive end or he can be an outside ‘backer.”

Daub transferred from Florida State in 2015 after signing with the Seminoles out of high school in 2014. He spent two seasons at junior college ASA New York before joining the Owls this week.

“I just wasn’t making the right decisions and it was just time for me to leave,” Daub said about Florida State.

Daub said he knew he wouldn’t qualify academically in time to play for Power Five schools, plus those programs wanted him to play special teams during his first year on campus. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

“So I came here to get an opportunity to play,” Daub said.

Next game: Navy at FAU, Sept. 1, 8 p.m., ESPNU
