Scrimmage looms large for QBs

-

BOCA RATON — For Florida Atlantic’s quarterbacks, Saturday’s scrimmage may be the biggest practice of preseason camp.

Saturday could mark the final big evaluation of FAU’s Jason Driskel, De’Andre Johnson and Daniel Parr as the three compete to earn the Owls’ starting quarterback job. FAU coach Lane Kiffin said the Owls would have a mock game next Friday, but that would be “more situational.”

“Obviously, every day is part of the evaluation process,” Kiffin said.

On Friday morning, the three quarterbacks rotated through with the first-, second- and third-team offenses, playing enough to get more reps in practice and on film. Kiffin said he did not know if he would narrow the field from three to two before naming a starter, or if he would name a starter outright.

“No idea,” Kiffin said. “They’ll decide that by how they play.”

Driskel started 11 games last year for FAU after beating out Parr during camp last year. Johnson is a junior college transfer who threw for 26 touchdowns and six interceptions for East Mississippi Community College.

Through the first 20 practices of preseason camp, FAU’s quarterbacks have failed to separate from each other.

Saturday’s scrimmage is open to FAU closed to the general public and the media.
