’Canes preparing for 2nd scrimmage
CORAL GABLES — The Miami Hurricanes are expected to hold their second scrimmage today on campus.
Coach Mark Richt just doesn’t know what time yet. He said that will depend on the weather.
“What I’m doing is I’m going to start in the morning, and if the weather is good, we’ll do it in the morning,” Richt said. “If it’s crummy, I’ll wait until the afternoon. If it’s crummy then, I’ll wait until the night. If it’s crummy again, I’ll go to the next day because we don’t know what the weather is going to do.”
Richt said the format will be mostly the same as the last one, with a few additions. They will also work on the one-minute drill, third-down situations and two-point conversions in overtime. This is likely the last scrimmage before Richt starts breaking down the depth chart.
The biggest open position-battle is at quarterback. Three weeks into the preseason, Richt said veterans Malik Rosier and Evan Shirreffs are still ahead of freshmen N’Kosi Perry and Casey Weldon.
“I’m concentrating on everybody,” Richt said. “These guys know any minute we’re breaking into scout team. Don’t come crying to me. We gave everybody reps. Ones, twos, threes got a boatload of reps, got a chance to show coach whether you’re ready or not. We just got to do to the best of our ability figure out who deserves to play.”
