Crowded QB race still not clear
BOCA RATON — Classes have started at FAU, but the Owls still don’t have a starting quarterback.
Following the last scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday, FAU coach Lane Kiffin said the coaching staff had not decided on a starter for the opener against Navy on Sept. 1. De’Andre Johnson, Jason Driskel and Daniel Parr are competing for the starting job. “No one took the job,” Kiffin said Sunday. Kiffin said Parr completed 55 percent of his passes on Saturday, while both Driskel and Johnson connected on 45 percent of their attempts. Kiffin said there was one passing touchdown and four interceptions but did not say who threw them.
“So, obviously, we’re doing that,” Kiffin said.
Last week, Kiffin said he would be watching to see how the quarterbacks protected the ball since he identified turnovers as one of the biggest problems during preseason camp.
FAU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles said it has been hard for the quarterbacks to develop timing with the receivers since three of them are splitting reps with the first-team offense. Briles’ offense also features a heavy amount of option routes, meaning quarterback-receiver chemistry is vital.
“Unfortunately, we just haven’t had a guy that’s stepped out and taking it,” Briles said. “I was hoping that was going to happen yesterday, and it didn’t happen.”
