Johnson reported out for season

-

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State’s offensive line depth took a hit over the weekend when Tomahawk Nation reported redshirt freshman C Baveon Johnson will miss the entire 2017 season with a torn meniscus, the same injury that caused standout S Derwin James to miss 11 games a season ago.

Johnson, who played his high school football at Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland, was the No. 1 center in the 2016 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings, and was FSU’s third highest-rated signee last year behind DB Levonta Taylor and OL Landon Dickerson.

Pegged by many to push junior Alec Eberle for the starting center spot this season, Johnson had been working as the second-string center behind Eberle during the first few weeks of Florida State preseason camp.

In Johnson’s absence, Corey Martinez has stepped into the backup center role with redshirt freshman Andrew Boselli also getting some reps.

Alabama coach Nick Saban is focused on preparing for the season opener against Florida State and doesn’t care about today’s eclipse.

“I watch the Weather Channel every day,” Saban said Saturday, according to AL.com. “They’re already saying what it’s going to look like in every city in America. So what’s going to be significant? Watch the Weather Channel, and you’ll see what it’s going to be like in Portland, Ore.”

Next game: FSU vs. Alabama (Atlanta), Sept. 2, 8 p.m., ABC
