Lawyers in fatal crash case to inspect tennis star Venus Williams’ records

Venus Williams’ cellphone records will be examined in a wrongful death lawsuit against the tennis star. It was filed after a June vehicle crash in Palm Beach Gardens.

Venus Williams’ smartphone records will be examined in a wrongful death lawsuit against the tennis star, over a June 9 traffic crash in Palm Beach Gardens.

Williams’ lawyers said Tuespasswo­rds day they will turn over her phone records from noon to 2:30 p.m. — just before and after the 1:13 p.m. collision. Jerome Barson, 78, a front seat passenger in the car that hit Williams’ SUV, died 13 days later.

“We deny that she was distracted,” Williams’ lawyer, Cunningham, told the Sun Sentinel.

Williams “may have been distracted and/or unnecessar­ily delayed in her reaction to applicable traffic signals and/ or other surroundin­g traffic,” the Barson family’s lawyers wrote to the court last month. No other details were provided with the allegation.

Attorneys for Barson’s estate also want a judge to order the physical inspection of Williams’ mobile phones with provided, and to ensure that Williams “refrain from altering or deleting” any data from the devices.

That request remains pending, Cunningham said, noting that such demands for records are “typical in all civil litigation.”
