Getting Lucky’s

Market set for grand opening in Oakland Park.

OAKLAND PARK — Organic grocery chain Lucky’s Market will kick off the grand opening of its new Oakland Park store on Wednesday with the chain’s signature bacon-cutting ceremony.

Instead of a ribbon-cutting event, “we really cut a huge slab of bacon with a ninja knife,” spokeswoman Krista Torvik said.

Grand openings of the young chain’s new stores are always attended by one or both of its founders, Bo and Trish Sharon, who created the company in Boulder, Colo., in 2003. They bought Trish’s family business, North Boulder Market, then reinvented it as a place to sell high-end products at affordable prices.

“Organic for the 99 percent” became the chain’s motto, although fans are also drawn to the $2 craft beers and $3 glasses of wine and encouragement to “sip ’n stroll.”

The Oakland Park store is at 1033 E. Oakland Park Blvd., just west of North Dixie Highway, in the building that housed Pearl Artist & Craft Supply from 1976 to 2014.

The store will be the 26th for the retailer, and third in South Florida. Lucky’s opened on Wiles Road and North University Drive in Coral Springs in spring 2016, and then on Peters Road near South University Drive in Plantation last December.

The Oakland Park location will also be the chain’s ninth in Florida.

In July, the company announced plans to open eight new stores, for a total of 22 stores in Florida by summer 2019.

Wednesday’s grand opening in Oakland Park is scheduled to begin with the baconcutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Local officials and co-founder Bo Sharon are scheduled to attend. Also planned is a presentation of more than $10,000 in donations to three local non-profit organizations — The Humanity Project, supporting anti-bullying efforts through arts at public schools; PACE Center for Girls Broward, funding purchase of five laptops; and the Broward Partnership for the Homeless, for purchase of six commercial gas stoves to help feed local clients.

On Sept. 2, the store will host a tasting fair featuring “some of Lucky’s Market’s favorite vendors,” food samples and gift basket giveaways.
