Bobby Wayne Hunt of Fort Lauderdale is accused in an accident along Federal Highway that led to a 91-year-old woman’s death.

Twenty-five years ago, Bobby Wayne Hunt was convicted in Broward County of DUI manslaughter and leaving a fatal accident.

This month, the state attorney’s office charged Hunt, 52, of Fort Lauderdale, with the same offense and more after a Jan. 20, 2015 crash on North Federal Highway that police said resulted in the death of a 91-year-old woman.

That Tuesday at about 9 a.m., a driver in a Nissan Murano SUV was headed north along North Federal Highway. As the driver approached the intersection of East Commercial Boulevard, Hunt’s white Chevrolet van struck the SUV from behind. The Nissan hit a tree in the center median.

Police did not identify the driver. Passenger Aileen Rhodes, of Fort Lauderdale, had fractures in her legs, pelvis and neck. Rhodes, a great-grandmother, died that afternoon at Broward Health Medical Center, records show.

Hunt is accused of leaving the scene without stopping to help; a witness followed him to a parking lot, according to an arrest report.

Hunt was described as being extremely jittery. A urine test found he had taken Xanax, methadone and had tested positive for cocaine, codeine, fentanyl and morphine at the time of the crash, the arrest report said.

After his 1992 conviction in a DUI manslaughter case in Broward County, Hunt was also convicted of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He served a year
