Benches clear 3 times, with 8 tossed

DETROIT — Once Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera wrestled Yankees catcher Austin Romine to the ground, Thursday’s game collapsed into total chaos.

The toll: three bench-clearing altercations and eight ejections.

James McCann and Justin Upton homered in the Tigers’ 10-6 win and Gary Sanchez went deep for the Yankees, but that became secondary.

The winning and losing pitchers, the Tigers’ Alex Wilson and the Yanks’ Dellin Betances, were tossed. So were the managers, the Yankees’ Joe Girardi and the Tigers’ Brad Ausmus.

Michael Fulmer hit Sanchez with a pitch in the fifth, an inning after Sanchez had homered for the fourth time in three games.

“If you can’t see that Fulmer hit Sanchez on purpose, there’s something wrong,” Girardi said.

Yanks reliever Tommy Kahnle was ejected after throwing behind Cabrera, and Girardi was tossed after he came out to argue.

“When they throw at me, it was OK. I was cool with that,” Cabrera said. “When they started arguing with the umpire, I said to Romine, ‘Calm down.’ ”

Romine took off his mask and Cabrera gave him a two-handed push to the chest.

“He said, ‘You have a problem with me?’ And I said, ‘This isn’t about you,’ ” Romine said. “And then he pushed me.”

Cabrera took two swings at Romine, and players from both teams ran onto the field. Cabrera and Romine were ejected.

After Yankees reliever Dellin Betances hit McCann in the helmet, the benches emptied again, and Betances and bench coach Rob Thompson were run.

Wilson and Ausmus were ejected in the eighth after Wilson hit Todd Frazier with a pitch and the benches cleared for a third time.
