Keep making progress toward ending racism Remember, actions have consequenc­es

On the morning following the tragic death of Heather Heyer in Charlottes­ville, Va., the YWCA USA issued a statement on behalf of the YWCAs across America, including the YWCA here in Palm Beach County. That statement read in part, “What happened last night and today in continuing violent protests is an unacceptab­le display of hate and white supremacy that has no place in our communitie­s. YWCA USA will not tolerate or normalize racism in any of its insidious forms.”

It would appear that the issue of Colin Kaepernick and his rights under the constituti­on allowing him free speech without consequenc­es are being advanced by the actions of the NAACP and others to counteract the negative impact.

For discussion’s sake only, let us agree that he was within his rights to take a knee during the national anthem. He is now without a job in the NFL, and the NAACP and others feel the NFL should correct what they determine to be an egregious situation. We must remember that whatever we do has consequenc­es — some positive and some negative.

On the other side of this issue there are many who totally disagree with this effort to secure a job for him. The NFL, like Colin Kaepernick, also has the same rights afforded him. The NFL
