’Canes to pick starting punter soon

- Christy Cabrera Chirinos

CORAL GABLES — Matt Bosher. Pat O’Donnell. Justin Vogel.

In recent years, the Hurricanes have turned out some top-notch punters.

But with a new season set to begin in less than a week, No. 18 Miami is still trying to settle on a starter who has the potential to be as reliable as some of the punters it’s had of late.

Throughout camp, redshirt sophomore Jack Spicer and freshman Zach Feagles have battled for the starting job, with special-teams coordinator Todd Hartley saying on Friday he expects to decide on a starter before the Hurricanes shift into game-week mode on Monday.

Spicer, a transfer from Florida, struggled at times in the spring but has kicked well throughout camp, Hartley noted. He averaged 37.4 yards per punt as a senior at Estero High.

Feagles, the son of former 22-year NFL veteran and Hurricanes punter Jeff Feagles, averaged 36.1 yards per punt last season in Ridgewood High in New Jersey.

“Obviously, Feagles has immense talent, but there’s certain things we do with our punt team — you have to know exactly where to punt the ball, where we want it punted, when we wanted it punted and Jack Spicer, a guy last year that nobody knew much about, has actually done a good job with some competition this year,” Hartley said.
