Stephen Cochran, a math teacher at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, was honored by the Mathematical Association of America recently with the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished mathematics teaching at the middle and high school levels. This national education award recognizes Cochran for his outstanding work to spark students’ interest in mathematics through participation in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions. The Edyth May Sliffe Award was established in 1989
Emilio Estefan Jr. and Gloria Estefan have been named the 2017 Film Florida Legends Tourism Ambassador Recipients, presented by entertainment production association Film Florida, to honor those in the entertainment industry who are ambassadors for the state. The Estefans were honored for their work in music, theater, film, television, books, restaurants and philanthropic efforts during a ceremony that was held recently at the Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism, at The Diplomat Beach Resort, in Hollywood.
Maria L. Sachs, former state senator and current executive director of Innovation Florida, was honored with the Guglielmo Marconi Award at The Order Sons of Italy in America’s (OSIA) 55th Biennial National Convention, held recently in Sarasota. She was recognized for her advocacy of offering Italian as a global language in all Florida public schools. She also promoted a resolution to recognize October as Italian Heritage Month to honor the 1.7 million Florida citizens of Italian descent and their contributions to society. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle has been selected by Gov. Rick Scott for induction into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame, which recognizes and honors those women who, through their work and personal lives, have made significant life improvements for women and for all citizens of Florida. Fernandez Rundle will be officially recognized during an awards ceremony on Sept. 27 in Orlando.
