- By Emily Bloch Staff writer

With a little help from the city, Miramar residents may be able to correct household code violations, install hurricane protection, make their homes more energy efficient, or even put down a payment on their first home.

Through city funding, the Minor Home Repair Program and Purchase Assistance Programs are encouraging low-income households and first-time home buyers to apply for financial assistance.

On Sept. 11, Miramar residents can begin picking up applications for assistance. According to a news release, the city has approximately $600,000 available to go toward its home repair program and approximately $200,000 for its first-time homebuyer program.

The Minor Home Repair Program will provide assistance to an estimated 12 households. The funding may be used to “correct code violations, make barrier-free modifications, install hurricane protection, address weatherization improvements, promote energy efficiency/conservation and address other minor home repairs to owner-occupied properties in the city,” a notice said. The funding is available for “very low and low income households” and priority will be given to households with special needs.

In addition, the First-Time Homebuyer Program will provide a down payment and closing cost assistance to approximately five applicants, the notice said - one with “very low income,” three with “low income” and one with “moderate income.” The amount of assistance is expected to vary based on the recipients’ income level and priority will be given to households with special needs.

Applicants for all programs will be processed on a “first come, first qualified, first served basis.”

To apply, both minor home repair and purchase assistance applicants must attend a mandatory workshop and pick up an application. Applications will be available on Sept. 11 with tickets being given to the first 100 applicants beginning at 9 a.m.

Applications can be picked up at the Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida Inc., 8569 Pines Boulevard, Suite 207, in Pembroke Pines between 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Completed applicants will be accepted for workshops by appointment only starting Sept. 25.
