Broward prep football returns

- By David Furones Staff writer

High school football is back in Broward County after Hurricane Irma wiped two weeks’ worth of games off the schedule.

The Week 5 slate of games in Broward will be played as scheduled after Irma caused Weeks 3 and 4 to be postponed, Broward County Athletic Association commissioner Shawn Cerra said.

The BCAA inspected fields Monday to assure football teams can return to practice and host games this Friday. Postponed games will be rescheduled, but dates are yet to be announced.

“We will be making every effort to play all 10 regularseason games,” Cerra said.

On Friday, Palm Beach County announced it would be making up its Week 4 games on Monday, Oct. 2, which was an ideal date because most teams are playing on Thursday of the previous week due to Yom Kippur. No decision about football games this week has been announced yet for Miami-Dade County public schools.

American Heritage and Chaminade-Madonna are not BCAA members, but their Week 5 game the Patriots are hosting, which will air on ESPN U, is on for 7 p.m. Friday. Dillard at Deerfield Beach, Plantation at Cypress Bay and Douglas at Cardinal Gibbons are among the top BCAA games to be played on Friday. Cooper City will visit Oxbridge Academy.

Broward is expected to follow Palm Beach’s lead in using Monday, Oct. 2 for rescheduling most games already postponed. Western announced its Week 3 game against Hallandale will take place on that date and the Wildcats’ Week 4 district bout with Everglades will be played on Sept. 25. Cerra said there will be “more to come.”

Volleyball games in Broward County will resume today, pending gym conditions.
