When rescuers got to the crash scene on southbound Interstate 95 on Tuesday night, the Honda Civic was on its roof submerged in a canal near Copans Road, officials said,

The driver, Robert Anthony Ruiz, 24, of Pompano Beach, was pronounced dead on site, said Sgt. Mark Wysocky, spokesman for Florida Highway Patrol.

Witnesses said Ruiz “had been driving in a reckless manner prior to the traffic crash,” Wysocky said.

No other vehicles were involved in the 8:05 p.m. crash.

Ruiz lost control of his car, spun, hit a tree trunk and rammed through a chain link fence into the canal, Wysocky said.

Authorities are looking for a black Chrysler 200 that may have been involved in a fatal hit-andrun crash with a motorcycle on Sept. 2.

Florida Highway Patrol on Wednesday released a dashcam recording showing the car parked on the northbound shoulder of Interstate 95 near Yamato Road.

Shortly after paramedics arrived, a man in red shorts and a long-sleeve blue shirt and talking on a cellphone got into the car and drove away.

The Chrysler may have a damaged right fender and a missing red reflector, said Sgt. Mark Wysocky, FHP spokesman. A motorcyclist lost control when he was hit by a vehicle that changed lanes, Wysocky said.

Kevin Scheinberg, 36, of Boca Raton, was thrown into the roadway. He later died from his injuries at a hospital.

“I can’t imagine how someone could hit someone and just drive off,” Scheinberg’s sister, Jessica “Sonny” Scheinberg, told the Sun Sentinel the day after the crash.

“This wasn’t just some guy on a motorcycle; this was a man with a golden heart.”

Investigators urge anyone with information about the crash or the Chrysler to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 954-308-5929.
