AROUND THE HORN

-

Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard will make a one-inning start Saturday in his first major-league game in nearly five months. He has been out since April 30 because of a torn lat muscle. The 2016 All-Star, who pitched twice in the minors during his rehab, will face the Nationals. RHP Matt Harvey will take over in the second inning. It will be Harvey’s 100th game in the majors and first official relief appearance. The Mets said Harvey was consulted and was fine with the plan.

Marlins: With two more pinch hits, Ichiro Suzuki will tie John Vander Wal’s 1995 record of 28 in a season. Vander Wal, then with the Rockies, had a 1.026 OPS in 1995 but started only five times.

Reds: C Tucker Barnhart agreed to a four-year, $16 million contract that covers his salaryarbitration years and the first season after he would have been eligible for free agency. Barnhart was batting .272 with six homers and 42 RBIs. He has committed only one error and leads MLB catchers in fielding percentage.

Brewers: Minor-leaguer Julio Mendez, who was seriously injured after being hit in the chest by a pitch last month, was moved to a hospital in his home country of Venezuela. Brewers GM David Stearns said Mendez remains in critical but stable condition. Mendez’s family is at his bedside. ... 3B Yadiel Rivera was assigned outright to Triple A.

Braves: Brian Snitker is on a one-year contract and doesn’t know if he will return next year as manager. Snitker, in his 41st season with the organization, hopes the front office brings him back despite his 127-148 record since replacing Fredi Gonzalez last year. “I’d love to be here,” Snitker said. “I want to be here.” The Braves are just 35-43 at their new home, SunTrust Park, and will finish with a losing home record in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1988-90.

Rays: RHP Chih-Wei Hu and 3B Daniel Robertson were recalled, LHP Xavier Cedeno was reinstated from the DL and SS Danny Espinosa was sent to Triple A.
