S. Florida USA Baseball standouts to be honored

South Florida high school baseball standouts that play for USA national teams, which all won international titles this year, will be honored before first pitch to the Miami Marlins game on Saturday at Marlins Park.

Along with St. Thomas Aquinas baseball coach Troy Cameron, who is an assistant coach for USA Baseball’s 15U team, American Heritage first baseman Triston Casas will be one of two players from the 18U team as part of the presentation called USA Baseball Salute to Champions.

Local 15U players in pitcher Nelson Berkwich (American Heritage-Delray), infielder/outfielder Michael Brooks (Park Vista) and infielder Giuseppe Ferraro (American Heritage after transferring from Archbishop McCarthy) will also be present.

The Marlins had two players, outfielders Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich, play for the World Baseball Classic title-winning team before the Major League Baseball season began.

Players will arrive at 5 p.m. to take in batting practice on the field. The ceremony begins at 6:45 p.m.

USA Baseball, after having its professional team win the World Baseball Classic this spring, had its 18U, 15U and 12U teams win titles in the summer. The 18U team won its fourth consecutive Baseball World Cup earlier in September, the 15U team split a title with the Dominican Republic in the Pan Am Championship in August and the 12U squad won gold over Chinese Taipei.

Miami-Dade County players in infielder Raynel Delgado of Hialeah’s Mater Academy and the 18U team and 15U pitcher Alejandro Rosario (Miami Christian) will be honored as 10 of the 13 are Floridians.

Two 12U players — Spencer Butt from Davie and Brandon Olivera of Hialeah — will be part of Saturday’s ceremony.
