Marlins hosting hurricane relief concert at Marlins Park
There isn’t any playoff baseball in South Florida this year, but Marlins Park is staying busy anyway.
The Miami Marlins announced Friday a benefit concert for disaster relief on Oct. 14, a week from Saturday. Called SOMOS Live! — somos is Spanish for “we are” — the concert is a fundraiser for those affected by recent natural disasters in Puerto Rico, South Florida, the Caribbean and Mexico.
Among those scheduled to perform: Marc Anthony, Camila, Gente de Zona, Nicky Jam, DJ Khaled, Prince Royce, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz and Daddy Yankee. That list is subject to change.
Tickets for SOMOS Live! start at $15. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the concert starts an hour later.
“We wanted to host this once-in-a-lifetime event at Marlins Park to bring our local community together for a great cause,” Marlins CEO Derek Jeter said in a statement.
This is a different approach from the Marlins’ efforts when the first two major hurricanes hit the United States this year.
After Hurricane Harvey, which devastated Houston and other parts of Texas and Louisiana, the Marlins held a supplies drive outside the ballpark before a few home games. After Hurricane Irma, which hit effectively all of Florida and much of the Caribbean, the Marlins made no public donation or relief contribution.
Jeffrey Loria sold the Marlins for $1.2 billion to Jeter and Bruce Sherman’s group in a deal finalized this week.
