Marlins cut four from 40-man roster

- By Tim Healey Staff writer

The Miami Marlins cut four players from their 40-man roster Saturday: right-hander Javy Guerra, right-hander Vance Worley, first baseman/outfielder Tyler Moore and outfielder Destin Hood.

The moves clear the way for additions to the roster, which has 36 players, starting next month via external additions or internal promotions.

Guerra spent spring training with the Marlins and most of the season with Triple-A New Orleans. In two stints with the major league team, Guerra, 31, had a 3.00 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 16 games (21 innings).

Worley, 30, wound up sixth on the Marlins in innings pitched (71 2⁄3) after joining the organization right before the start of the regular season. He reached the big leagues in mid-May, bouncing between the rotation and bullpen while posting a 6.91 ERA and 1.80 WHIP.

Moore, who won a roster spot out of spring training, hit .230 with a .267 OBP and .401 slugging percentage in 104 games. He spent several weeks in the minors early on, but returned for good in early May and for at least one stretch — with first baseman Justin Bour briefly on the disabled list — tore it up. Moore, 30, finished with six homers and 30 RBI, but zero homers and nine RBI in the second half.

Hood, 27, did not see the majors this year. He slashed .260/.349/.498 with 14 homers for New Orleans through mid-June, then landed on the disabled list and didn’t play again.
