It’s time we codify sensible gun laws
The argument that the Constitution is sacrosanct, ergo, the Second Amendment is sacrosanct, is a specious argument. The Founding Fathers meant for the Constitution to be a document capable of adapting to changing times. To that end, the amendment process was implemented.
The original Constitution counted slaves as 3/5’s of a person, prohibited women from voting, and stipulated that U.S. Senators were to be elected by state Legislatures, rather than by popular vote.
Even the conservative Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger interpreted the Second Amendment as a reference to guns in the hands of the militia rather than guns in the hands of individuals. It is time we codify sensible laws of gun ownership to protect little children in their classroom and people of all ages enjoying a concert. It is time we join civilized countries that protect human beings instead of guns. Norma Ullian Greenstein, Southwest Ranches
