Mission United carries on with $2 million grant

- By Helen Wolt Staff writer

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs renewed Mission United’s grant for a fifth year. The $2 million award for the United Way of Broward County’s initiative will support its Supportive Services for Veterans Families program.

Under the SSVF program, the Veterans Administration awards grants to nonprofit organizations and consumer cooperatives, like United Way of Broward County, that are dedicated to helping returning veterans.

In the four years of the SSVF program, Mission United has assisted more than 2,000 families to obtain or maintain housing and provided almost $2.5 million in financial assistance. And it has helped to reduce the number of veterans on the streets in Broward County by almost 40 percent, according to a United Way statement.

“We are honored and privileged to have been chosen by the VA to continue to serve veterans in our community who need a hand up with housing, employment, and other needs,” said Mission United Director Ken Juede, a retired Army sergeant major. “Additionally, this funding will

also allow us to provide emergency assistance to veteran families impacted

by Hurricane Irma throughout South Florida.”
