DORAL — ChaminadeMadonna coach Dameon Jones got an opportunity to square his Lions off against his former offensive coordinator at Hallandale, Jase Stewart, now in his second season as head coach at Doral Academy — the same as Jones at Chaminade.

A week of smack talk between the two culminated in a 41-5 Lions win at a rainy Doral on Thursday night as Chaminade (5-2) won its fourth straight, snapping the Firebirds’ streak of six in a row.

“We’ve been talking all week — just back and forth trash talking,” said Jones, who in his first year at the helm got the Lions to the Class 3A title game. “Kids came out and played tonight. I’m proud of them — under tough conditions.

“We’re starting to gel right now at the right point, getting ready for the playoffs again.”

Shaun Shivers, who finished with 109 rushing yards, ran for a pair of scores in the first half — one from 10 yards out and another from 17 where he evaded about five would-be tacklers before reaching the end zone.

“This is what we wanted,” said Shivers, an Auburn commit. “We started off kind of slow, but now we’re peaking.”

Quarterback Daelen Menard, who threw for 82 yards on 11 attempts, scampered in a 2-yard touchdown on a play fake to give Chaminade a 26-3 lead.

The Lions got it to 29-3 at halftime on one of kicker Daniel Longman’s three field goals. Receiver Marlin Mayo kept the scoring going in the second half with a 1-yard touchdown run on a sweep.

The Chaminade defense forced three turnovers. Ahmaud Jordan picked off a pass and Justinn Richardson intercepted two for the Lions.

With rain pouring in the second half, the two teams combined for three safeties — two after halftime. The second for Chaminade ran the clock midway through the fourth.
