Frederick Owens has been appointed vice president of the Associatio­n of Certified E-Discovery Specialist­s, South Florida chapter. Owens is electronic discovery and litigation support coordinato­r who works with Gunster attorneys and profession­al staff in West Palm Beach. The group focuses on profession­al education, training and networking for those who work in the public and private sector. Owens will serve through 2019. Jones Walker LLP announced that Ivan R. Panico and Aaron D. Silvers have joined the Fort Lauderdale office of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, as associates in the profession­al liability department. Gov. Rick Scott has reappointe­d Mario J. Bailey, senior government relations consultant with Becker & Poliakoff ’s government law and lobbying team, to serve on the South Florida Regional Planning Council for a two-year term. The council helps determine economic growth and environmen­tal policies.

Orangetheo­ry of Boca Raton announced its new chief developmen­t officer, Gregg Koffler. Koffler spent more than a decade leading developmen­t efforts for several brands, including Smash Burger, Corner Bakery Cafe and Wyndham Hotel Group.

Rick Macci, of the Rick Macci Tennis Academy and a Boca Raton-based tennis coach, was recently inducted into the United States Profession­al Tennis Associatio­n hall of fame, at an event in Orlando.

Crystal Tejera has joined The Elmir Group, as a Realtor associate, in Miami, to handle sales for project listings, assist clients with transition­ing into Miami; and additional­ly as charity liaison to spearhead all charitable endeavors for The Elmir Group. Miami Dade College President Dr. Eduardo J.

Padrón will serve as commission­er for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s initiative to support the role of journalism as essential to a healthy democracy. The initiative is anchored by the Knight Commission on Trust, Media and Democracy, a diverse panel of community and industry leaders who are committed to creating more informed and engaged communitie­s. The nonpartisa­n commission will explore causes of the erosion of trust in democratic institutio­ns, including the press. It will seek solutions for rebuilding public trust in the media. BB&T-Oswald Trippe and Co., expanded its Southeast Florida team by hiring two new associates as commercial lines producers:

Radiation oncologist Rupesh Kotecha, M.D., has joined Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida’s radiation oncology department.

Angelo Ayar, M.D. has joined Florida Dermatolog­y and Skin Cancer Centers, in Tamarac. Ayar was most recently seeing patients in the practice’s Winter Haven clinic. Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center awarded urologist Dr. Sean Sawh, with its Physician of the Quarter award. Sawh was nominated by his peers for going the extra mile for his patients by explaining their diagnoses and the procedures they were to undergo.

Florida Internatio­nal University President

Mark B. Rosenberg has been appointed as the Associatio­n of Public and Land Grant Universiti­es representa­tive on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Task Force on Apprentice­ship Expansion. The task force was formed in response to an executive order signed by President Donald J. Trump to expand apprentice­ships and vocational training, close the skills gap and reduce regulatory burdens on workforce developmen­t programs. It includes 20 representa­tives from companies, trade and industry groups, educationa­l institutio­ns, and labor unions.

Ira J. Braunschwe­ig, M.D., a diagnostic radiologis­t at the Boca Radiology Group, has been elected to the board of directors of Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) Foundation, the charitable and education arm of the Jewish college social fraternity. Braunschwe­ig was elected at the fraternity’s 104th annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
