Yoga studio to host Florida Keys fundraiser

- By Emily Bloch Staff writer

When Hurricane Irma passed, Plantation resident Amy Talisman and her coworkers at a local yoga studio felt lucky to come out of it unscathed.

“We all felt so grateful that he storm did not cause more damage to our area,” she said. “But we also felt completely helpless seeing pictures and hearing stories about the Florida Keys.

So the co-owner of Yoga Connections out of Davie and her team decided to help the best way they knew how — a yoga class.

On Oct. 14, the studio will host Connected Hearts — an all-levels Vinyasa yoga class being purposed as a Florida Keys Fundraiser. Talisman describes Vinyasa yoga as a type of yoga where each pose is connected to a breath, resulting in a continuous flow of movement with each inhale and exhale.

“We have designed this class specifically to promote community, healing, peace and serenity and people should be encouraged to

come with their families,” Talisman said.

The fundraiser is being held in partnership with Feeding South Florida, a charity devoted to alleviating food insecurity. There is no fixed donation amount — “anything helps,” the event description explains — but a donation to Feeding South Florida will include participation in the Connected Hearts class and light refreshments. The charity will get 100% of the money Yoga Connection collects.

“Moving and breathing together as a community with an intention of helping others promotes a sense of healing that can help with the helplessness we all feel,” Talisman said. “There is a very real connection between yoga and healing.”

Connected Hearts: A Florida Keys Fundraiser will be held on Oct. 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Yoga Connection, 6555 Nova Drive, Suite 302, Davie. Donations are being accepted now through the day of the event via cash or check. Check donations should be made payable to Feeding South Florida.
