Boca approves condo project

-

People heading to Boca Raton’s beach on Palmetto Park Road will see wider sidewalks, broader tree canopies and more expansive landscaping once a new condo building is built.

Ocean Palm, a 70-unit development on the corner of A1A and Palmetto Park Road, is in the clear to rise across the street from the city’s South Beach Park.

“This is all stuff that is going to improve the area along the beach,” said Boca Councilman Jeremy Rodgers before the council approved the project last week.

The plans also include adding three parking spaces on the street, where six spaces are now.

The block of Palmetto Park just west of the beach will get sidewalk pavers, benches and miniature park areas, according to a video from architects GS4 Studios.

The 3.5 acres currently contains a threestory, 20-unit condo building and an empty lot. It’s bordered by Palmetto Park Road on the north and A1A on the east.

The project is headed by One Ocean Plaza Venture, LLC, a Miami-based investment group. Representatives from the company were not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

Ocean Palm also had buy-in from some neighbors during Tuesday’s meeting who said they felt developers listened to their concerns.

“We had a couple hiccups along the road, but I think we resolved those,” said Mark Simmons, head of the Riviera Civic Association, which represents homeowners who live just north of the proposed project. “We’re in support of it.”

Just south on A1A, residents of the 20-story Marbella condo community were less enthused about the plan, its board said.

“They are concerned about looking across the street into windows and being blocked,” Marbella board vice president Carrie McGuirk said.

No date for construction to start has been set. Ocean Palm is the second major project in Boca from GS4 Studios, the same firm that designed the upcoming Mizner 200 project in the city’s downtown.
