Musical debut
Female Zimbabwe quintet to perform
Love, humility, unity and family — those are the themes that “Nobuntu,” an African concept, is centered around.
And on Nov. 5, five women hailing from Zimbabwe will bring the notion to life at Broward College’s Bailey Hall. Nobuntu, an all female a cappella quintet will make its Florida debut at the hall to perform genres including traditional Zimbabwean, Afro jazz and gospel.
“We are excited to present Nobuntu on its first tour of the U.S. and introduce South Florida audiences to their amazing sound and uplifting performances,” Bailey Hall Director Dan Barnard said.
Nobuntu formed in 2011 and its concerts feature traditional instruments like the mbira, which is a thumb piano, as well as authentic dance movements. The group called itself the first all-female professional a cappella group in Bulawayo and Zimbabwe.
The group’s debut album, “Thina,” was released in 2013 and a tour through Austria, Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic followed shortly after. Earlier this month, the group performed at the University of Florida.
Nobuntu performs on Nov. 5, 7 p.m. at Bailey Hall, Broward College Central Campus, 3501 Davie Road, Davie. Tickets range from $6-$23 with student and senior discounts available. For more information, contact the Bailey Hall box office: 954-201-6884.
