Bullets fly, customers dive at store
Gunfire erupts as busy lunchtime crowd shops at CVS; man killed
When gunfire erupted during lunchtime Wednesday at a crowded CVS store in Davie, customers ducked for cover and one man was fatally wounded, police said.
“The person we believe is the shooter is at the police department,” Davie Police Maj. Dale Engle said. “Detectives are waiting to view store video before we speak to him.”
An argument between two men may have sparked the violence, witnesses told detectives.
“There were some words exchanged,” Engle said. Neither man worked at the store.
The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. at the pharmacy at 4610 S. University Drive. There were about two dozen people in the store, Engle said.
Responding police officers ordered the alleged gunman to come out of the store and took him into custody, Engle said. He was not arrested. Paramedics took the injured man to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood where he died, police and fire rescue officials said.
“I’m not quite sure what the circumstances were
that brought these individuals to the store,” Engle said. “We are still interviewing people and will not have any more information until morning.”
The store is located at the busy intersection at University Drive south of Griffin Road.
It is near three college campuses and many restaurants and is especially bustling at midday.
The CVS store was still closed into the night and police officers remained at the scene. Employees and other witnesses stood behind police tape that encircled the business in the aftermath of the shooting.
Police withheld some details, including the names of the men; what kind of gun was used and the number of shots fired.
