Singletary impresses Marshall coach Wilcox: ’Noles may play Warhawks

-

BOCA RATON — Add Marshall coach Doc Holliday to the list of those impressed by Florida Atlantic running back Devin “Motor” Singletary.

As the Thundering Herd prepares to face the Owls later this week, Holliday said he considers Singletary a potential NFL player.

“He’s physical, he’s tough, he makes all the cuts,” Holliday told reporters earlier this week. “He’s a good back. We have a couple of coaches who know some guys who were on their previous staff and they think he’s an NFL-caliber talent. When you watch him on tape that’s what he looks like. He gained a quiet thousand [yards rushing] a year ago. Coming into this year, eight games in, he already has over a thousand yards. He’s a good back.”

A sophomore, Singletary has already run for 1,053 yards on 159 carries. His 18 rushing touchdowns are tops in the nation. Holliday, who was an assistant at Florida and has always had a strong recruiting presence in the state, said the Owls are finally starting to benefit from the area’s talent.

Singletary, who played at American Heritage-Delray, is among several FAU contributors from the South Florida area.

“I’ve always felt that FAU has some of the best talent as anybody in our league,” Holliday said. “They should considering where they’re located. They’ve developed that talent now and they’re playing really well.”

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State plans to make an announcement regarding its rescheduling of a canceled football game against Louisiana Monroe in the next week, athletics director Stan Wilcox said Wednesday.

Whether to play or not to play the game against the Warhawks, originally scheduled for Sept. 9 and called off because of Hurricane Irma, remains the question.

“We’re working on a release that will come out next week,” Wilcox said after an athletics board meeting Wednesday afternoon. “[Coach] Jimbo [Fisher] and I have talked about it. And we’ve talked to a lot of other people. We want to wait until after this week, and then put something out next week.”

FSU would host Louisiana-Monroe in Doak Campbell Stadium on Dec. 2, a day reserved for college football conference-championship games.

But a local event — Tallahassee’s Winter Festival, scheduled from 3-10 p.m. on the same day — has complicated logistical plans to have law enforcement in place for the football game.

“We have to work with a lot of folks to make sure everything will be in place to be able to do it,” Wilcox said. “That’s a part of all this.”

If the game is rescheduled, FSU would get a chance to generate revenue during its sixth home game of the season and the contest could help the Seminoles’ push to become bowl eligible.

Next game: FSU vs. Syracuse, Saturday, 12:20 p.m., ACC Network
