CORAL GABLES — As No. 10 Miami began preparations for Saturday’s game against third-ranked Notre Dame, one of the Hurricanes top defensive players was scheduled to have surgery Monday afternoon.

According to UM, redshirt junior defensive end Demetrius Jackson injured a “lower right extremity” in the Hurricanes’ 28-10 win over Virginia Tech this weekend and the surgery was to take place at the UHealth Sports Medicine Institute at the Lennar Foundation Medical Center on Miami’s campus. A source told the Sun Sentinel that Jackson injured his knee.

His status for the remainder of the season will be determined after surgery.

A former standout at Miami’s Booker T. Washington, Jackson has been having a productive season with 18 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss. He also has 3.5 sacks and an interception. He has played in seven of Miami’s eight games this season, and those tackles for loss are tied for the team-high with sophomore Joe Jackson.

Without Demetrius Jackson, the Hurricanes will likely turn to several of their younger reserves, including freshmen Jonathan Garvin, out of Palm Beach Gardens High and DJ Johnson.

Jackson took to social media on Monday, writing on Twitter, “Love my TEAMMATES. Finish Strong!! Minor set back for a major comeback.”

He also posted that he plans to continue fundraising efforts for his charity foundation, which is planning a turkey drive next week.
