Texans take pass on Kaepernick

- News services

The Texans signed freeagent quarterback Josh Johnson on Tuesday and released Matt McGloin.

The moves came day after coach Bill O’Brien said they had discussed the possibility of adding Colin Kaepernick in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to rookie Deshaun Watson.

Instead of adding Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback who began a protest movement by kneeling during the national anthem last season, the Texans chose Johnson to be their third quarterback.

Johnson, 31, has been with the Giants, Bills, Colts and 49ers over the last three seasons, but hasn’t appeared in a game since he played two for the Bengals in 2013. He spent his first four seasons with the Buccaneers and appeared in 26 games from 2008-11.

McGloin was signed Friday to be the third quarterback behind Tom Savage and T.J. Yates, but was inactive Sunday.

Former Colts defensive star and current assistant coach Robert Mathis was charged with a misdemeanor of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, endangering a person in Carmel, Ind.

Police said Mathis, 36, was arrested early Oct. 24 after driving the wrong way on a one-way street and not signaling a turn.

Mathis retired as a player after last season following a 14-year career with a team-record 123 sacks for the Colts. He was named to the Pro Bowl six times. He’s now on the Colts coaching staff as a pass rush consultant.

day after Giants coach Ben McAdoo floated the idea that he would consider using some young players, and no position was being excluded, two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning said that he definitely wants to keep playing.

Manning told reporters after the team’s workout that he didn’t hear McAdoo’s comments on Monday’s conference call.

“My goal is to prepare every week and do my job,” Manning said. “He said that he’s got faith in me and to keep grinding. So that’s what we’re doing. I want to play. That’s what I like to do.”
