Jones: Forced sale ‘ridiculous’

- Tribune news services

Jerry Jones dismissed the notion that the NFL could force him to sell the Cowboys because of his attempts to block an extension for commissioner Roger Goodell.

“I’ve had not one, not one, inkling of communication from the league office or any owner that would suggest something that laughable and ridiculous,” Jones said Tuesday on his radio show in Dallas.

“If somebody is asserting that or thinking about that kind of thing, they’re not knowledgeable on how things work in the NFL.”

The notion surfaced in a ProFootballTalk.com story suggesting the league could have a “nuclear option” to force Jones to sell the Cowboys, although it noted it would be highly unlikely for the league to go down that road.

But that’s how contentious things have gotten between the owners over Goodell’s extension. Jones has threatened to sue the league if the six-member compensation committee doesn’t seek approval among the other owners for Goodell’s extension.

The compensation committee’s chairman, Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Jones did not meet or even exchange pleasantries during the Cowboys’ latest road game.

“We didn’t and, frankly, hadn’t planned to,” Jones said.

MRI for Samuel: Rookie wide receiver Curtis Samuel will undergo an MRI after injuring his left ankle in the Panthers’ 45-21 win over the Dolphins on Monday night.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said trainers were “not very optimistic” about Samuel’s prognosis after he hobbled off the field in the third quarter and did not return.

Russell Shepard would likely replace Samuel if he is sidelined.

Seahawks sign Maxwell:

The Seahawks signed cornerback Byron Maxwell to help make up for the loss of Richard Sherman toa season-ending Achilles tendon injury. Maxwell knows the defensive system after starting his career with the Seahawks and becoming a starter during the 2013 season.
