‘Motor For Hei5man’ buttons ready

BOCA RATON — The Florida Atlantic athletic department decided it wanted to give this weekend’s Shula Bowl a little added flavor.

In preparation for Saturday’s game against Florida International, the student body will receive buttons promoting running back Devin “Motor” Singletary for the Heisman Trophy.

The sophomore leads the nation with 23 touchdowns and is fifth in rushing yards (1,360).

“That’s just amazing for him. Let’s just keep it going,” center Antonyo Woods said.

The school released the campaign Tuesday morning. The blue buttons feature the words, “Motor For Hei5man.” There is also a picture of a race car bearing No. 5, Singletary’s jersey number.

“I don’t see why he shouldn’t be in talks. … The film speaks for itself,” running back Gregory Howell Jr. said. “Most people are probably saying he’s not playing the opponents others are playing, but everybody’s out here to compete. He’s just doing his thing.”

The question is whether Singletary will join in the fun. Despite the record-breaking season — he owns the school’s single-season TD record and is on pace for the yardage mark — he tends to shy from attention. Teammates didn’t think he would wear the button. Woods said, “I think he’ll just be like, ‘Ha ha, that’s funny.’ ”

Next game: FAU vs. Florida International, 7 p.m. Saturday, ESPN3, WTCN
