Ex-student visits school, arrested with loaded gun
A former student arrested Thursday at Charles W. Flanagan High had a loaded gun in his pocket, Pembroke Pines police said.
Major Charneil Byrd, 18, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having a firearm on a school campus, records show. He is being held in the Broward Main Jail.
“It is unknown what the suspect’s intentions were regarding his presence at his former high school with a loaded firearm,” said Capt. Al Xiques, a spokesman for the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
“At this time this is believed to be an isolated incident and there are no continued safety concerns.”
It was 9:05 a.m. when school security spotted Byrd near the school’s portable classrooms and recognized him, even though a hoodie covered his head, Xiques said.
Two school resource officers detained Byrd for trespassing. It was when they handcuffed him that they noticed the loaded 9 mm Glock in his waistband, Xiques said.
Byrd also had a containing 11 bullets.
Byrd was uncooperative and refused to answer any questions, Xiques said.
Authorities emphasized that students, teachers and parents should report any suspicious people or activities, especially on campus during school hours.
“The commendable and collaborative efforts of both school security and the Pembroke Pines school resource officers helped avert a potential tragedy from occurring today,” Xiques said. 31-round magazine
