Another golf course is being considered as a site where hundreds of homes would be built, this time in Tamarac.

South Florida has been seeing once popular golfing destinations turned into housing stock. The latest proposal calls for building 525 single-family homes across two 18-hole golf courses at Woodlands, off Commercial Boulevard.

In exchange, the developer would leave 120 acres empty and separate the new homes with lakes or landscaping, said Mike Nuziata, president of 13th Floor Homes. There also would be guardhouses added to the entrances and the trails for golf carts will be replaced with trails for walking, running and biking.

“Woodlands is a special place and it deserves a good plan,” Nuziata said.

The developer, 13th Floor, is the same group that built about half the 706 homes off Commercial Boulevard in Tamarac on the former Monterey and Sabal Palm golf courses.

A third golf course in Tamarac, at Woodmont Country Club, is scheduled for 152 homes, although by a different developer.

Other courses facing redevelopment are in Weston and Boca Raton. This past summer, the Palm Beach County Commission unanimously approved a plan to build 521 homes on the former Marina Lakes Golf Course west of Delray Beach.

In Tamarac, Nuziata said his firm will seek input from the community before proceeding
