Football second-round playoff predictions

The high school football playoffs are in the second round and Sun Sentinel reporters Wells Dusenbury and David Furones have predictions on all 10 games featuring teams from Broward and Palm Beach counties. Furones is 84-26 on the year while Duse remains three games back in the standings at 81-29. All games on Friday at 7:30 p.m. REGION 3-8A SEMIFINALS (8) PARK VISTA AT (4) ATLANTIC

Duse: After its stunning upset over Miramar, no one should be sleeping on Park Vista. Still, Atlantic’s balanced offensive attack should make enough plays to knock off Vista for the second time this year. Atlantic 21-17. Furones: I like Atlantic riding its nine-game win streak. The Eagles won the first matchup 10-3 and will get another one with some more scoring involved. ATL 23-17. (6) WESTERN AT (2) PALM BEACH CENTRAL

Duse: Palm Beach Central’s secondary has been lights-out with Akeem Dent and Tre Jackson, but I think Western RB Keshaun Clarke can help the Wildcats pull off another upset. Western 21-20.

Furones: The senior QB-RB-WR trio of Harrison Story, Keshaun Clarke and Jordan Smith should make enough plays against a very stout Broncos defense while the Wildcats play some strong defense of their own. Western 17-14. REGION 4-7A SEMIFINALS (4) WEST BROWARD AT (1) ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Duse: West Broward may be able to chew up time of possession with its single-wing, but the three-time defending state champs are too stout defensively. STA 35-13.

Furones: Great run for the Bobcats to win their first district title and then earn the school’s first playoff win, but it ends at Brian Piccolo Stadium. STA 34-10. (3) DORAL ACADEMY AT (2) DWYER Duse: When Dwyer is running the football well, the Panthers are tough to stop. I think Bobby Armes and Cedrick Tucker carry the team into the regional finals — and set up a playoff rematch with St. Thomas. Dwyer 24-17.

Furones: This could actually turn out to be Dwyer’s deepest playoff run since the 2013 state championship by way of meeting St. Thomas later under the new playoff format. Jack Daniels has done an impressive job with a young group this year. Dwyer 27-23. REGION 4-5A SEMIFINALS (5) ORLANDO BISHOP MOORE AT (1) AMERICAN HERITAGE

Duse: Heritage’s defense has dominated opponents all season long, and it’s hard to see the Hornets being the team to sting them. AH 40-6.

Furones: The Patriots are too fast and too dominant on defense. Bishop Moore didn’t impress very much in the opening round against Fort Pierce Westwood while also dropping a 37-7 decision to Orlando Jones this season. AH 38-3. (6) CARDINAL GIBBONS AT (2) ROCKLEDGE

Duse: While Gibbons is known for its “Air Raid” passing attack, the running game has really set the tone. The Chiefs follow up last week’s 313-yard rushing performance with another big night on the ground. CG 38-14. Furones: The road-warrior Chiefs come away with a more convincing victory at Rockledge and carry some momentum as they return to Broward to take on Heritage in the regional final. CG 34-7. REGION 4-4A FINAL (2) MIAMI PACE AT (1) UNIVERSITY SCHOOL

Duse: The Sharks backfield combo of Kenny McIntosh and Michael Hurt has pounded opponents all season and that trend will continue as they get set for potential semifinal showdown with Cocoa. University 35-21.

Furones: The Sharks’ offense is really clicking after dropping 44 points on Glades Central. Pace’s defense is tough, but U-School gets through. University 24-16. REGION 2-3A FINAL (4) MELBOURNE CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT (2) OXBRIDGE ACADEMY Duse: Tough test for the ThunderWolves, but Oxbridge’s defense is too strong. Oxbridge 23-10 Furones: Melbourne CC will come out motivated, but Oxbridge’s defense will ultimately prove to be far too much. Oxbridge 30-14. REGION 4-3A FINAL (2) BENJAMIN AT (1) CHAMINADE-MADONNA (AT CALVARY CHRISTIAN)

Duse: Benjamin has had a great run, but the Lions are too loaded across the board. Chaminade 49-7.

Furones: Chaminade cruises regardless of if the Lions host at day or at night, on campus or off campus. Shaun Shivers goes off again and the “Turn-Up Belt” makes several appearances. C-M 41-3. REGION 4-1A FINAL (3) FROSTPROOF AT (1) PAHOKEE

Duse: Pahokee debuted its new turnover chain on Twitter this week, and it’s lit. Blue Devils will be extra pumped up to make plays and rock it in front of the home crowd. Pahokee 49-10.

Furones: Pahokee played better competition than what the Blue Devils face in the Class 1A postseason to be prepared to go out and dominate. Pahokee 48-13.
