Recalls? Check to see if you’re affected
I was surprised by the recent news that more than 40 million Kidde-brand fire extinguishers made since 1973 are being recalled because they may not work in an emergency — the very time they’re needed. My husband and I keep two in the kitchen (one never can be too safe). Armed with the model numbers, I checked to see if we were due a free replacement by calling the recall hotline at 855-271-0773.
Lo and behold, the plastic-handle kitchen model (FX10K) will be replaced for free. I was told to expect a shipment. It’s among the 134 models of plastic handle and push-button Pindicator extinguishers subject to recall (see full list at kidde.com).
Which raises a question: Are you due a free replacement, too, on something you own that is subject to recall?
To find out, peruse the list of latest recalls or use the search tool at Recalls.gov or the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website, cpsc.gov. For example, certain child safety seats — a common handme-down item — are subject to recall, including Graco’s My Ride 65 convertible child restraints.
Same goes for Calphalon-brand Contemporary Cutlery knives, which “can break during use,” so “consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cutlery and contact Calphalon” at 800-809-7267, states the federal consumer commission website. Many things have been recalled in recent months.
Pet promo: Certain pets are free, while sterilized, microchipped cats and dogs that are at least 1 year old can go home for half price on Black Friday (Nov. 24) at the Humane Society of Broward County, 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale (954-989-3977). Normally, adopters pay $100 per dog and $30 per cat. Thrown into the deal: a free bag of pet food, preliminary vaccinations, a heartworm test for dogs and a feline leukemia test for cats.
Freebie: To try a Schwarzkopf Gliss hair repair product for free after rebate (valued up to $7.99), make a purchase by New Year's Eve and mail a rebate form printed via schwarzkopftrymefree.com or find it at bit.ly/zerogliss.
