Variety of ’Canes receivers thrive

CORAL GABLES — Entering the year, the Hurricanes figured they had a deep group of talented receivers who could make plays. The group has more than lived up to expectations.

Through the Hurricanes’ 10 games, 16 different players have caught at least one pass for Miami — including quarterback Malik Rosier and offensive lineman Tyler Gauthier. Among Miami’s regular receivers, 10 players are averaging at least 10 yards per catch and seven of them have scored at least one touchdown.

“Whatever coach [Mark] Richt puts together for the week, all of us in the receivers room, we know not to get jealous,” reciever Dayall Harris said. “That’s the main thing [receivers coach Ron] Dugans preaches. We don’t need division within, so either I’m making a play or [Lawrence] Cager’s making a play, or Ahmmon’s making a play and it still feels like I made the play. If I’m not playing, but we win, that’s all that matters at the end of the day.”

Entering the Pittsburgh game, Braxton Berrios leads the receiving corps with 41 catches for 522 yards and eight touchdowns.

Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach. Under Diaz, the Hurricanes defense has held opponents to 4.6 yards per play, which ranks 12th nationally.
