No. 1 Duke, No. 9 UNC prevail
Trevon Duval scored 22 points and top-ranked Duke pulled away for a 99-81 victory over tenacious Portland State to open the Phil Knight Invitational on Thursday in Portland, Ore.
Marvin Bagley III added 18 points and Grayson Allen had 14 points and nine assists for the Blue Devils (6-0), who trailed by eight midway through the first half.
The victory was Mike Krzyzewski’s 200th as coach of a No. 1-ranked team.
It was the first time in program history that the Vikings (4-1) had faced a top-ranked team.
■ Luke Maye had 20 points and 10 rebounds and No. 9 North Carolina put five players in double figures in overwhelming Portland 102-78 at the Knight event.
Joel Berry II scored 18 points for the Tar Heels (4-0), who shot 55 percent in the second half.
The Pilots (2-2) were out of it by halftime.
