Girls shine at annual Miss Arc Broward pageant
Everyone was a winner at the fifth annual Miss Arc Broward Pageant.
The pageant, which serves to empower girls with disabilities, recently took place at the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale.
On the day of the pageant, excitement was at an all-time high for everyone involved. Parents and loved ones sat in the audience while volunteers worked hard to support their daughters backstage. The love in the room was amplified by cheer squads assigned to contestants, making them feel like the ultimate rock star every time they were on stage.
The contestants participated in two rounds. The first was a personality round, during which the girls presented their many talents to the audience and judges. Some girls sang and danced, while others showcased their artwork. The second round brought out the glamor with evening wear and a Q&A session with emcees Nicole Krauss, media and community relations manager of Publix Super Markets, and Sheli Muñiz, morning anchor of NBC6 South Florida.
All 20 contestants were recognized with individualized titles, such as Katelyn Eugene’s “Best Dancer” award, Amanda Hoy’s “Coming Out of Her Shell” award, and Nola Schader’s “Next American Idol” award.
The judges had to ultimately make the tough decision of selecting two young ladies from the group to represent their fellow contestants as the 2018 Little Miss and Miss Arc Broward.
From this point forward, the two titleholders will go on to represent their fellow contestants in appearances throughout Broward County, including some of Arc Broward's events and the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick's Day parade.
Contestant Saylor Burgoyne was crowned Little Miss Arc Broward, this being her third time participating in the pageant. Burgoyne said she felt a mix of emotions the moment her name was called.
“I was shocked and happy and nervous and proud,” said Burgoyne. “I couldn't believe I won.”
The 10-year-old also won the award for “Best Fashionista.” For the talent portion, Burgoyne presented her artwork in a dress that she painted for the pageant.
“She loves fashion and loves to paint, so I am excited for the confidence she has gained through this experience and how it will help her in pursuing her passions,” said Ronna Burgoyne, Saylor’s mom.
Thirteen-year-old Genesis Altamiranda was crowned alongside Burgoyne as the 2018 Miss Arc Broward. This was the first time the teen had ever participated in the pageant.
Altamiranda said she was excited about winning and just as happy that she made new friends.
Contemplating what she hopes to get away from this experience, Altamiranda said she’s not sure just yet but she can’t’ wait to see where it goes.
“The disabilities do not define who we are or who we will be in life,” Altamiranda said on how she hopes to represent her friends.
The Miss Arc Broward Pageant is one of the signature events of Arc Broward, a nonprofit based in Sunrise.
“We hope that the way people view these young ladies and what they can do will be changed as a result of the pageant,” said Dennis Haas, president and CEO.
