Fraternities and sororities at Florida Atlantic University cut alcohol use

Changes announced by fraternities and sororities at Boca Raton-based Florida Atlantic University are meant to make alcohol use less prominent at organized events.

The FAU Greek Alliance sent out a letter to all sororities and fraternities this week announcing the changes that will go into effect today. That’s when thousands of people are expected to attend the school’s championship football game when the undefeated Owls host North Texas in the Conference USA championship game.

The alliance has canceled all chapter-sponsored tailgates, citing circumstances of past tailgates at FAU.

The letter says that sorority and fraternity members can still tailgate, but only in small groups.

The student leaders also say there won’t be alcohol at any parties or socials for the remainder of the fall semester.

Additionally, events hosted by chapters that involve alcohol are canceled starting Jan. 1.

The group pointed to alcohol issues locally and nationally as the driving force behind the bold move.

The alliance will revisit its decision at the end of January.

Once the ban is removed, fraternities and sororities will be required to have an alcohol vendor at events rather than supplying it themselves.
