Sophia A. Nelson, setting an example
Sophia A. Nelson, chief community connector for S.A. Nelson & Associates, a strategic public relations and communication agency, recently joined the board of the West Palm Beach Police Athletic League. It’s an organization that resonates with Nelson, she says. For the first 12 years of her career, she managed direct service to the youth of Palm Beach County. Working with youth has been a focus for Nelson. She has worked as the transportation director for the Palm Beach County School District; program manager at Planned Parenthood of South Florida, and director, youth development and education, for The Urban League of Palm Beach County
Why my board appointment is important: WPB PAL is supporting the Northwest Community, which has a rich history of strong business and entrepreneurship. Participating students will be able to see me as a symbol of success and look to use me as a guiding light to their future.
On the board
Impact: I have many friends who grew up in the area and they are now very successful in their careers. I want to be the conduit to push them to come back and give. WPB PAL needs partners to continue the good foundation it has laid.
Top goal: To help raise $100,000 for ongoing programming.
Challenge: Not having the space and the funds to service every student
that needs the help. Not that anyone is turned away, but we always want to do more for the students and their families.
Wisdom: Stay ahead of the curve. A big part of “seeing around corners” is being proactive about change.
On-the-board etiquette tip: Forget and forgive: sometimes things that are not under your control get in the way. Note it, let it go, find a solution, and move on. This may not be obvious at the moment, but it will make you stronger later.
Strategy
Advice to young professionals: Align your day-to-day efforts with the expectations you have for your future.
