5-car crash closed turnpike SB lanes

All southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike in Hollywood were closed for about an hour Thursday night because of a five-car collision.

The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. south of Sheridan Street. By 7:30 p.m. one southbound lane had reopened.

“The turnpike is going to be a little bit of a mess for awhile, because it involved all lanes of traffic southbound,” said Battalion Chief Jorge Gonzales, spokesman for Davie Fire Rescue.

One person was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood in stable condition, Gonzalez said.

Four other people with minor injuries refused treatment at the scene, he said.

A box truck rear ended a car at high speed creating a chain-reaction crash, Gonzalez said.

The city’s Public Works Department also added mesh catchers in the storm drains near the museum to collect any other stray sprinkles.

Located at 3400 Collins Ave. in the Faena District, the Museum of Ice Cream is a temporary pop-up that will be open through the end of January.

In a statement, museum spokeswoman Devan Pucci, said “we take our role very seriously as a public-facing entity and aim to inspire and position ourselves as a brand who greatly understands our social responsibility and cultural presence… As a result, we have taken immense precautions to ensure we are environmentally conscious and implementing sustainable efforts.”

Pucci added that the museum has brought in “multiple cleaners that are constantly sweeping around the building as well as paying extra attention to the waterway entrance” and that the museum has “already begun the process of creating a biodegradable sprinkle for our Sprinkle Pool that will be implemented in the near future.”

The museum, which was touted by its owner as “a safe environment for visitors to embrace their imagination and creativity” opened to much fan fare.

It features frozen treats and rooms decorated with bananas, another for gummy bears and the Sculpture Room which has oversized pink bonbons.
