Former Owls WR Woods chosen to play in game
Receiver Kalib Woods, who just completed his eligibility at Florida Atlantic, has been chosen to participate in this year’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
The game will be played Jan. 20 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Despite missing nearly half of the season after being suspended indefinitely in the offseason, Woods had 24 catches for 619 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged a team-high 25.8 yards per reception.
Woods missed the first six games following his arrest on felony battery charges stemming from a fight in Boca Raton last January. His scholarship was revoked but he returned as a walk-on and received his first playing time of the season against North Texas in October.
“Those are heavy prices for a very bad mistake that he made,” FAU coach Kiffin said earlier this season after Woods was reinstated. “I would think that if you looked around the country for incidents like that, it’s pretty heavy compared [other punishments].”
Four weeks later, Woods caught seven passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the Owls’ victory against Florida International in the Shula Bowl. He was later named Most Valuable Player of the Conference USA Championship Game, to catching six passes school-record 208 against North Texas.
Woods did not speak to the media this season except briefly after the conference title game. He said he was ready to move on and that he learned from his mistake.
According to for a yards NFLdraftscout.com, Woods is rated as the 83rd-best receiver available. Woods, who finished his FAU career with 135 receptions for 2,106 yards and 10 touchdowns, will likely end up as an undrafted free agent.
