Pit bull attack occurred at same address in October

The owners of three pit bulls in Lauderhill have been cited by police after the animals escaped through a hole in their fence Saturday night and mauled a man walking by, the second attack by dogs from that address since last October when three people were attacked.

According to Lauderhill Police, the dogs were inside a cage Saturday but were let out so it could be cleaned.

As the dogs were free to roam the yard, on the 3100 block of Northwest Fourth Court, a man was walking by at 9:45 p.m. and the animals escaped through a hole in the fence and attacked him.

The victim was bitten on his face, arms and throughout his body and was hospitalized in serious condition at Broward Health Medical Center.

It took several people to pull the animals back, and they were put back into the cage. The dogs were picked up early Sunday by the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center, and their fate is unclear.

In the previous attack, no dogs were picked up, and it was not certain Sunday if the same dogs were involved in both attacks, said Lt. Mike Santiago, spokesman for the Lauderhill Police Department.

It is legal to own pit bulls in Palm Beach County and in Broward County, but Miami-Dade County bans the breed. Broward does have a “dangerous dog” ordinance that requires owners to register any dogs as such if they have been involved in a previous attack or exhibited aggressiveness or

have been trained to fight. The owner is required to post warning signs and maintain proper enclosures, according to county ordinance.

According to a Sun-Sentinel story, from June 2016 to June 2017 in Broward County, there were 92 bites reported by American Staffordshire dogs, and another 26 bites by pit bull terriers, both considered types of pit bulls.
