LAUDERHILL – Police said Monday they shot and killed a man suspected of robbing another man and then running away.

The robbery took place at a bus stop shortly before 8 p.m Sunday on the 800 block of State Road 7 in Plantation.

The victim flagged down a Lauderhill police officer to report his backpack had been stolen, said Lauderhill Lt. Michael Santiago.

The suspect ran about a block to the east into the city of Lauderhill, where officers from Lauderhill, Davie and Plantation searched for about an hour, Santiago said.

“The search led police to the rear of a residence located at 781 NW 39th Avenue, where they encountered a suspect and shots were fired. The shooting resulted in the death of the suspect,” he said.

Police said early Monday that a firearm was found near the suspect.

The officers involved in the shooting — who were from Plantation and Davie — were placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol. Their names, and the name of the man who was fatally shot, have not been released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the lead agency investigating the shooting.

Lauderhill police ask anyone with information about the case to contact the agency at 954-497-4700 or contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
