DELRAY BEACH — An “upset” senior captain Sarah Borer scored on a wicked 35-yard, left-footed blast with less than three minutes remaining to lift the host American Heritage-Delray girls’ soccer team a 2-2 draw with Pine Crest on Tuesday night.

“I was really upset and I needed to make a comeback and I am glad that I did because at least we made a tie,” said Borer, who has a team-leading 11 goals for the Stallions (6-1-3). “I am upset we didn’t win, but at least we tied on senior night.”

Borer’s goal came just 45 seconds after Pine Crest’s Natalie Klar floated in a shot from 25-yards out to the far post past junior goalkeeper Jonelle Barron. Klar’s 12th goal of the year gave the Panthers (12-3-2) a short-lived, 2-1 lead.

American Heritage took a 1-0 lead in the second half when senior midfielder Bre Alarcon scored her fourth goal off the season from distance over the head of Pine Crest senior goalkeeper Skylar Pollock in the 47th minute. The Panthers answered in the 65th minute when senior defender Karlie Pollock lofted a 35-yard free kick to senior forward Eva Spyredes, who controlled the ball inside the penalty area and found the far post for her 12th goal of the season.

“I think we are peaking at the right time,” said Spyredes, who finished with a goal and an assist. “I think going forward we will definitely be doing some noise in districts, regionals and hopefully states.”

Pine Crest got off to a slow start this season at 1-2-1, but has gone 11-1-1 since then including handing state power Viera its first loss of the season, 3-0. Until Saturday’s game, Viera was unbeaten in 12 games and had outscored the opposition 62-2.

The Panthers played the game without their leading scorer Jessica Nedry. The sophomore, who missed most of her freshman season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and has returned this season with a team-leading 13 goals and 13 assists, was out with a groin injury.
