Stand up and work together

As a senior and long-time independen­t, I am saddened and confused by what I am seeing unfold right before my eyes. To see the fabric of the America I have known unravel in a plethora of lies and name-calling when we need to confront massive issues together is most distressin­g. For us to lose our compassion along with our world leadership is just wrong. I know we are better than that.

Where are the true statesmen and stateswome­n that will step forward and forge policies that maintain our power, and our economic excellence along with caring for those that need our help? Issues today are complex and require serious thought and action. Most of these issues will require negotiatio­ns and compromise, and all of this requires great leadership.

Almost a million of our finest — of all races and religions — have perished in wars defending this great nation and we need to honor their memories and sacrifice by pulling together to preserve our strength and our values. SunSentine­l.com/opinion/ letters

that their present government is trying to improve conditions. Since the earthquake, with many parents being killed, the child porn and sex trade has exploded. There are American funded and organized organizati­ons that are trying to rescue these exploited children.

I would like to suggest that those individual­s who call themselves Haitian-Americans notice that the first word describing who they are is Haitian. How about returning to Haiti, to this country you so love as you describe, and do something to help improve the lives of your fellow Haitians still living there.
