Boy, 13, home alone during break-in hides; 2 men sought

- By Tonya Alanez Staff writer

Home alone when two burglars smashed a slidingglass door, the 13-year-old boy ran upstairs and locked himself in a closet in the master bedroom, Pembroke Pines police said.

While the thieves ransacked the Cinnamon Place home in the 1400 block of Southwest 88th Way on Sunday afternoon, the boy called 911, a police report said.

Meanwhile, the seventhgrader’s mother, who was elsewhere, watched the burglars via a security system on her cellphone. Thinking the teens were her son’s friends, she tried calling her son, who was on the phone with police, the report said.

When contacted by telephone Tuesday afternoon, Thuy Nguyen, 42, said police had advised her not to speak about the case.

The intruders busted the door frame to the master bedroom and entered the room while the boy was hiding in the closet, the report said. They evidently did not detect the boy in his hiding spot. He was unharmed.

Police arrived and surrounded the home, but, according to the report, the burglars had already run away.

The suspects are both described as being between 16 to 19 years old and between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall with thin builds. They each had short dreadlocks and were wearing black shirts, black shorts and long white socks.

Detectives urge anyone with information about the break-in to contact the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s investigations bureau at 954-431-2225.
